Rainbow Dresden Plate Quilt Finish

I just finished one of my oldest quilts last week! I started in in March 2011 and finished it in April 2020. Eek! I ran into trouble part way through and packed it away until I had more patience. (It appears I am lacking in patience...)

This queen sized quilt is made of 9 Dresden plate blocks that finish at 23 1/2" wide. I turned the edges under and then machine appliquéd them onto a tone-on-tone white squares (26"). Then I sewed the squares together and added a border.

I made the border longer on the bottom so It would tuck under the bed. I always recommend laying your quilt top on the bed it will be used on and measuring how long you want the borders before you cut them out and sew them on. That way you get a top that is perfect for your bed. (Be sure to add an inch or two for shrinkage due to quilting and washing.)

(edited) I started the Dresdens as part of a quilt along but the templates are no longer online unfortunately. The lady who ran the quilt along, had us piece the background onto the Dresden instead of appliquéing it, but I went off script because I thought appliquéing would be easier. And less patience testing.  ;)

I love looking at the blocks and remembering the different fabrics that I used. This was at a time in my quilting where I had fabrics from my friend’s grandmother, fabrics from JoAnns, and fabric from my local quilt store all mixed together. I absolutely love how they looked all mixed up together!

I had Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting quilted it for me using a clamshell type pattern. I love how it turned out. It is really nice to be able to send quilts off and have them come back so nice. (If you want to give her a try, first time customers can save 25% when they mention my name. This isn't sponsored, Lilo just does a good job at a good price.)

Here's to finishing off those old UFOs!
