Quilty Chicks Sampler Quilt - A 2024 Chicken Block of the Month

I am so excited to tell you about my new pattern! Quilty Chicks is a fun chicken sampler quilt. There are seven chickens, each with a different interior quilt block, cute chick blocks, and four flower quilt blocks. So much cuteness in one place!

How did I get the idea for a chicken sampler?!

The idea for this quilt started over a year ago. My friend Lilo asked if I wanted to work with her to design a chicken quilt. It didn’t end up working out but by the time we scrapped the idea I had chickens on the brain. And because I didn’t have Lilo to rein me in, the idea of a simple chicken quilt with one block morphed into a sampler quilt with 7 chickens, 4 flowers, and chicks. Go big or go home, right? :)

Quilting done by Lilo of Trace Creek Quilting!

Quilty Chicks is a large throw and measures 72” x 82”. I had Lilo quilt it with the Chicken Wire pantograph. I love this close up picture! The texture is great and I will never get enough of the chick quilt blocks! If you look closely, you’ll notice that while the basic body of the chickens are the same, there are multiple options for chicken combs.

Fabric Tips

I love using small-scale, tone-on-tone prints in my quilts and this chicken quilt is no exception. The ‘almost solid’ prints let the interior quilt blocks on the chickens shine. The quilt is also fat quarter friendly! You’ll need one fat quarter for each set of chickens and a fat eighth for each interior block. You don’t need a ton of fabric for the flower heads and can use scraps to piece them if desired.
